[Vero had had a plan for today. The plan is still in motion technically, but he had managed to fail step one: tell Chance upfront that this date was meant to be a date date. A romantic one. With feelings. But Vero had gotten nervous and hadn't told him.
Normally, Vero isn't the type to get nervous. Anxious, yes, but nervous? He's pretty confident in himself unless it's in regard to something really important or unpredictable. But anything involving Chance has been a special circumstance from the start (emphasis on special) (and, he supposes, a bit unpredictable)
Chance is the closest Vero has ever come to "love at first sight." Chance has waltzed in with his gentle words and soft touch, and had swept Vero right on his feet in a way he had never imagined possible. He'd thirst crushed on people at first sight but obviously that completely different from this. This was a "I want to be with him" sort of feeling. His sweet nothings had left Vero wanting to know more about him. And that -- that didn't happen in the first meeting usually! Especially if it was just a hookup!! Hell, he hadn't even felt so positively about Lyric upon first meeting her and now he loved her more than he loved himself!
He loves being with Chance but acknowledging the feelings is weird and scary and nerve wracking. Deciding to finally do something about these feelings was terrifying. No amount of pumping himself up or reassuring words from Lyric could totally quell his nerves. So Vero had gotten nervous.
There's an awful thought in his mind that he doesn't want to screw this up. He doesn't want to lose Chance. Chance is kind-hearted, to a fault sometimes, but Vero doesn't want to push his luck. Chance is nice to everyone; he's not special. He's just his close friend with benefits.
An even more awful thought reasons, too, that Chance is fairly honest. If he feels the same way, then wouldn't he have said something by now?
Unfortunately, there's no time left to spend overthinking this. Chance is waiting outside and Vero has a really wonderful (not) date planned for them. Vero grabs his cooler stuffed with picnic foods (thanks Al) and makes his way out.
He swallows his fear the minute he sees Chance and, because his love is uncontrollable and Chance wont think twice about it probably, greets him with a kiss. Short and Sweet. Vero pulls back with a smile.] Hey, handsome. Right on time.
