[ Yukimura expected many things when enrolling in university - to meet and befriend new people, to make his family (particularly Shingen, the man who practically raised him) proud, and to excel both in his studies and on the soccer field. And, to his credit, he's done all those things quite well. Though only a first year in his second semester, he's on track to becoming vice captain next year, his grades are fairly solid, and he has more friends than in his high school days.
Among that list of friends is his roommate, Mitsunari. It'd taken a bit of time (and some roommate bonding nights he strong-armed him into) for their relationship to develop but Yukimura wouldn't trade their friendship for anything in the world. He loves Mitsunari with all his heart and would do just about anything for him without a single hesitation.
There's just one tiny, tiny problem, though: he wants Mitsunari to be his boyfriend.
He never expected to fall in love - romance wasn't on his radar - but the more he sees of Mitsunari's soft but fiery spirit, his fierce tenacity and unwavering loyalty toward who and what he believes in, the further he falls. And there's only so much he can do to tame the fire burning in his heart when he's the first person Yukimura sees in the morning, and the last one he sees before drifting off to sleep.
He knows he should say something already. He's never hesitated to express himself before, and every second he doesn't, he risks his heart bursting from everything he's holding back. But even with Sasuke's reassurance, Yukimura is afraid. What if Mitsunari doesn't like him in that way? Would he lose his dear friend by admitting his feelings?
Alone in their shared dorm room, Yukimura face-plants into his open textbook with a loud groan. ]
[Mitsunari is not the best at feelings. He's always felt things very strongly - too strongly - but he doesn't know what to do about those emotions that just want to pour out of him constantly. Ever since he learned that shouting his feelings at the top of his lungs was not the best way to go about them, he's never learned how to appropriately express himself.
So when the beginnings of romantic feelings for his roommate Yukimura start crawling under his skin, Mitsunari is thrown into turmoil. He wants to say something, but not only does he not even begin to know How, logically he shouldn't because there are many possible consequences to deal with. But also, it doesn't feel right not saying anything either. It feels like he's lying to Yukimura every day now, and both his own honor and loyalty to the other boy is weary with it.
It burns inside him like acid, but he just... can't risk his friendship with Yukimura. Mitsunari hadn't expected to make any new friends in college: he was happy with his small social circle that had carried over from high school. So to be suddenly gifted with this friendship (dare he say..... bond.... ) that has proven over time to be his most important and most cherished, and suddenly throw it away because of his treacherous heart? It's out of the question. He will never meet anyone quite like Yukimura again. He's sure of this.
Keeping a lid on his feelings gets progressively harder as times passes though, so he's spent a lot of that recent time with Motochika. Motochika, another cherished friend, proves to be a good distraction from his thoughts and often times they'll partake in some physical activity that leaves Mitsunari exhausted and mind blank once he returns to Yukimura and their shared dorm. (A wistful 'I want to kiss him' may sneak in whenever Yukimura is looking particularly precious, but those are easy to swat away. No way. No Way. He would Never.)
Such is the case as of now. After classes, Mitsunari had met up with Motochika and when he'd gotten back to their room, Yukimura hadn't been there so he'd jumped into the shower. Yukimura being absent is the only reason Mitsunari comes back into the room shirtless, rubbing his hair dry with his towel.
If he'd known Yukimura had returned... well, he'd definitely be more dressed. But he's not, and the sight of his roommate startles him. His heart jumpstarts into his throat and suddenly he's feeling extra exposed even when Yukimura's not looking at him.
There's no way Yukimura didn't hear him enter the room, but he's still going to hurry to his side and busy himself with finding clothes. They can avoid acknowledging this, this is FINE.]
YOU'LL HAVE TO PRY COMEDIC DOUBLE COMMENTING OUT OF MY COLD DEAD HANDS
[ Yukimura jolts at the sound of the door opening behind him, and he quickly sits upright to pretend he was reading his textbook like a good student and not moaning and groaning over the thought of dating his roommate.
How well that works is up for debate - Yukimura is, unfortunately, very easy to read at times - but all the same he smiles as he turns in Mitsunari's direction. ] Mitsunari-san, welcome ba--
Though Yukimura only gets a glimpse of Mitsunari before he's got his back to him, the image of his chest is immediately burned into his memory. Mitsunari's on the lean side, but ever since starting to work out with Motochika, Yukimura's (guiltily) noticed a shift in his physique. He's got more definition now than when they first met, particularly in his arms and legs. In Yukimura's eyes, he's always been attractive, but seeing the no longer subtle curve in his biceps as he drys his hair is too much for his poor heart.
Especially since, up until this point, he's never seen Mitsunari without a shirt on. Given that they're both modest people, they've gone to great lengths to avoid undressing in front of each other. Even after developing romantic feelings for Mitsunari, he never tried to sneak a glimpse - he didn't want to betray the trust they've built over the past several months. So the sight of his bare chest and abdomen in general right in front of his eyes makes him realize that he's even more attractive than he ever thought possible.
In an instant, Yukimura flushes, red up to his ears, and his face is back in his textbook as he loudly exclaims. ] M-my apologies, Mitsunari-san!! I didn't- you- I'm--!!!
[ His brain is all but fried. He's scrambling for words, but all he can think is how desperately he wants to touch him, even for a second.
[And, of course, upon hearing Yukimura yelling, Mitsunari drops everything he's doing - meaning: his clothes that haven't been put on his body yet - and whips around to face him.
He'd been trying to keep his bare chest out of Yukimura's sight but - oops, there is it now.]
WHY [He's shouting regardless but he especially shouts that part.] are you APOLOGIZING?!
[Yes, they're both on the modest side but this reaction is a little..........]
[ Yukimura's heart leaps straight into his throat, and he makes an audible choked noise as he hides further in his textbook, until only wisps of brown hair are visible over the pages. ]
My apologies are necessary, for I did not mean to gaze upon your undressed form!! [ While he's not yelling quite as loudly as Mitsunari, there's a shrillness to his voice as words tumble clumsily from his lips. Composure? What composure? ] I beg you for your forgiveness, so that we may move forward from this moment!!
[Riled like this, Mitsunari continues to shout without thinking. He rises to his feet, ready to approach should the situation call for it.]
We may not move on from this! Explain to me, Yukimura, for I still do not understand why gazing upon my undressed form would garner such a reaction when we are both men?!
[He steps forward.] Do you find my body so offensive?!
If Yukimura could verbally keysmash, he'd be doing that right about now. ] N-no! Please believe me when I say that is not the case at all, Mitsunari-san!! Truthfully, it is the opposite, for I find you most attractive--
[ The textbook slips from Yukimura's grasp, falling with a heavy thud onto the floor beside his feet. His brain catches up with his mouth and the world around him comes screeching violently to a halt. And while he's finally able to meet Mitsunari's gaze, that lasts about a second, as he scrambles mentally for a response - something, anything - and only manages to come up with ]
-- AAAAAAAAHHHH!!
[ a loud scream, as he audibly slaps his hands over his face. Yukimura turns away from Mitsunari, facing the wall, and curls in on himself as though if he became tiny enough, he can vanish from this plane of existence entirely.
No matter who he asked for advice on the matter (Sasuke, Motochika, Keiji, even Masamune), their response was basically the same across the board. They told him that he's honest and earnest, and the best way forward was to not overthink and speak from the heart.
This probably isn't what any of them imagined (but maybe it is - they know how clumsy Yukimura can be). ] M-M-MITSUNARI-SAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!!! [ AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ]
