Vero sends a short, confirmatory text and continues on with his day. He continues to text Lyric throughout the day because work is nothing special - kinda boring actually - until finally he's released and he can tell her that he's on his way.
He would be lying if he said this wasn't what he always looked forward to at the end of the week. Lyric and Morgan are his family - he adores them more than he even marginally likes most things. And he would do anything for them for nothing despite how Lyric thinks she needs to thank him or whatever. It wasn't necessary when she wasn't a mom and they were just best friends and it certainly isn't necessary now.
Suffice to say, he really really isn't expecting anything out of the ordinary when he gets to Lyric's home. He practically lives there himself so he let's himself right in.]
[ The first thing Vero will notice upon stepping into her home is a banner on the wall, hung as high as a 5' and some inches woman on a chair can reach. In childish handwriting that's clearly Morgan's are the words "THANK YOU" with an excessive amount of hearts. There are also streamers taped to the walls in no particular pattern - just a little something extra to bring more color to the surprise party.
Next is the smell from the kitchen - clearly one of Vero's favorite dishes - but he won't be able to linger on that long as the third thing, a small child with purple hair, all but crashes into him with a delighted squeal. ]
You're here!! [ Hope you didn't like moving, Vero, because Morgan's quick to establish a pretty firm grip on your legs. ] Mama, Vero's here!
[ And Lyric peeks her head out from the kitchen to give him a warm smile. ] Glad to see you're in one piece - work didn't kill you?
He's stuck staring at the banner, mouth slowly parting. But of course when Morgan attaches to his legs, Vero's attention is all on the child. He ruffles Morgan's hair ("hey kiddo ~") and then offers his arms for Morgan to climb into, but there's still a look of surprise and lowkey confusion on his face.] N..o...? What is all this?
[ Morgan is more than ready to climb into Vero's embrace, giggling happily as his tiny arms wind around him and squeeze tight.
The small child won't give Vero any answers, but Lyric will. ] It was his idea - he came up with most of this himself. [ She gestures to Morgan with the ladle in her hand. ] He... no, both of us. I know I've said "thank you" many times before but we wanted to properly thank you for everything you've done for us.
[ "It's a party!" Morgan chimes in helpfully. And Lyric laughs a little before continuing. ] You don't get a say in this, by the way. We're celebrating you.
Vero wants to argue so badly. This isn't necessary. He helps out as much as he does because he loves Lyric and Morgan, and he knows Lyric would do the same for him any day. But he looks between Morgan, so happy in his arms, and Lyric and he suddenly can't find it in himself to argue.
He feels his face burn, though, and just the slightest pre-cry tingles.] Fine.. just this once though, got it?
[That's directed at Lyric clearly. Morgan gets a big ol' cheek smooch.] Can't believe you planned this, little guy. Thank you...
But for now, Lyric will relent with a simple "I know." before ducking back into the kitchen to finish whatever she's making for dinner. Morgan, meanwhile, squeals in delight and returns that big ol' cheek smooch with one equally as big and affectionate. ] Mm-hm! I looooove you!
[ his favorite!! person!!! that isn't Lyric!!!!! ] I gotsta show you something, okay? It's just for you!! [ He points in the direction of his bedroom. Take him there, take him there!! ]
[Vero never would have considered himself good with kids before Morgan was born. But it's so easy with Morgan - there's no being uncomfortable or unsure like with other children. It's probably because he's Lyric's kid.]
Just for me??? [Well alright then!! Taking Morgan to his bedroom!!]
