[ Even with all the unspoken feelings threatening to burst forth from his chest, Chance smiles and returns Vero's kiss without a second thought. Because that's just how their relationship is - comfortable, even with its... perhaps unusual amount of intimacy and affection for a pair of definitely not straight men claiming to be "just friends".
After Vero pulls back, he laces his fingers with his and kisses him (and his smile) once more, for good measure. ] I didn't want to keep you waiting... especially not tonight. [ Because Vero has a really wonderful (not) date planned for them!!!!!!
His warm smile only grows as they quietly chat and walk hand in hand to Chance's car. There's a mess of blankets and pillows spread across the back seats and floor, but he makes room for the cooler next to his own little basket with a thermos and containers filled with some extra treats.
Once inside, he immediately turns on the heater (gotta make sure Vero's warm) and starts up a playlist of music they both like. ] I've never been to this theater before - will you direct me there?
I've never been to this one either, actually! [But he is pulling up the directions on his phone so they will get there sure as sugar.] I've known about it for a while but just haven't gone. [He hasn't had anyone to go with.]
But they're playing a movie I've been wanting to see and how could I pass up a chance to go out [Go out. Go on a date.] with you. [He's beaming. Also, he won't tell Chance this but it's a movie he's debated seeing because going to see it alone would suck. But he knows it's gonna make him cry and there's not many people he wants to cry around. Chance is one of the few.
This is definitely the farthest they've gone for a (not) date but they make it there eventually and with the perfect amount of time to get set up before the movie starts.
There's butterflies rising in Vero's chest as they lay out the blankets and pillows and all their food. The date's just barely started and he's already feeling lighter than air. He never knew he could be this in love with a person.]
[ Their (not) date hasn't even truly begun and Chance already feels it's perfect. The skies are clear above them, and the park itself is beautiful. (he makes a mental note to come back another day, just to explore. maybe with vero. that'd be lovely.) Not to mention that he's genuinely excited to see this movie - he's made it abundantly clear through text and conversation, but... he's a bit of a sucker for the romance genre. And while he might be embarrassed to see a sappy, schmoopy movie with most people, he knows Vero wouldn't tease him for being a softie.
Which, speaking of being a softie. Once their comfy little blanket nest is made as comfy and cozy as possible and they've both settled in, Chance shrugs off his zip-up hoodie and drapes it over Vero's shoulders. ] Here - you look a little cold. [ He then hands Vero a (cute) little thermos cup of warm coffee, because really, gotta make sure the boy's warm. ]
Vero shrugs Chance's jacket off his shoulders but only so he can actually slip his arms into the sleeves to wear it proper. It's too big on him and the sleeves cover a good bit of his hands, which makes it easier for Vero to hold his cup of coffee. His cup of coffee that is just how he likes it because, again, Chance is just perfect and way too good to him.] Let me know if you get cold, though. We'll switch off.
[And just to triply make sure he's warm enough, Vero cozies up to Chance's side while the movie plays.
To no one's surprise, when the romance in the movie starts ramping up, Vero feels it deep in his heart. The love the character's have for each other, the look in their eyes, resonates with him and he can't help but cozy even closer to Chance. He laces his fingers together with his date's. Quietly. Without looking away from the screen.]
[ While Vero's eyes are locked on the screen, Chance can't help but look at Vero. The relationship blooming before their eyes, filled with love and gentleness, tugs on his heartstrings and he- he wants to kiss Vero. He wants to kiss him, right here, right now. But that would be weird, wouldn't it? They've kissed many times before, but this... this is different. If he kisses him now, he might end up betraying all the emotions he's trying to keep locked inside, for his sake.
Chance takes a quiet breath and squeezes his hand gently. ] Vero...
[ He's never hesitated like this before around him. The twisting in his guts, the nervous and erratic way his heart pounds, like his very ribs are piercing through the organ... he hates it.
So he bites the metaphorical bullet and touches Vero's cheek, to turn him toward him for a kiss. ]
... Sorry. [ The hand doesn't leave his face, but he's quick to look away after, almost... embarrassed with himself, for being unable to resist this urge. ]
[The kiss feels different, that's for sure. Not that Chance's kisses haven't taken his breath away before, but wow. Maybe it is because of the movie that that felt really romantic.
Vero blinks the surprise off his face. He rubs his finger against Chance's where their fingers are laced, gives them a little squeeze.] That was nice. [And unspoken: so don't apologize.
Now would be the perfect moment to confess, wouldn't it? The kiss was loaded with feelings. Even Vero can figure that much out. So he should do it. He should just... ] Hey, Chance...
[But maybe it was just because of the movie. Like when you're slow dancing with someone at prom and you just feel that pull, the force of the moment drawing you together. They're not the only couples smooching at the movies right now. And Chance is an extremely empathetic person, after all.]
[ The glowing warmth on Vero's face, the way the light from the movie screen dances in his eyes, the coolness of his finger as it brushes over his... if Chance didn't know any better, he'd suspect they were the stars of this movie, not the actors whose names he never bothered to learn. He's almost certain he knows what Vero wants to say - I like you. I love you. - and he feels those words on the tip of his tongue too, practically prying at his jaw to escape his lips... but he's not brave like the protagonists. He's just Chance, a simple boy with a big heart and almost an equally large amount of anxiety.
He squeezes his hand a little tighter. ] No. Tell me... please. [ Please prove to him that he isn't wrong, that he's not overthinking this, that despite hurting someone in the past it's okay for him to love again-- ] I mean- only if you want to.
Oh, um. It's nothing, I just - [Now, Vero averts his eyes.
It's not nothing. He's in love with Chance. He's been head over heals in love with him since they met, since Chance held him, since he learned how Chance wont wake up before 10am if he can help it, and every little darling habit of Chance's thereafter. Every moment they spend together is bliss, and Vero only wants to spend more time with him without this line they've put between each other.
He's going to cross it. Vero looks back up at Chance. His smile is small and anxious.] - I really like you, Chance. [That's not enough. That's barely scratching the surface.] I love you.
[ For a moment, the world vanishes around them. All Chance can see is Vero before him - the nervous smile on his lips, the hopeful in his eyes, the softness of his voice. His breath leaves him in a rush as his fingers curl against his cheek and he replies instinctively, weakly. ]
That's- that's not nothing.
[ How could it be nothing, when those few little words make such a warm and happy feeling bloom in his chest?
He pulls Vero to him, wrapping his arms around him tight. Like this, Vero can't see Chance's radiant smile, but surely he can hear it in his voice. ] I love you, too... I really love you, Vero.
[It's not nothing. It's very much not nothing. It's very much a big thing that Vero finally has off his chest and Chance is reciprocating.
Vero doesn't wait even a single beat to hold Chance back, arms tight around him and Chance's shirt wrung into his hands. He breathes him in, absorbs everything he loves about this boy for the umpteenth time. He can't see Chance's smile but he can hear it. He can feel it and his warmth radiating off him.] I love you. I love you so much... I'm so happy it's not just me..!
[What a relief, what a relief, what a relief. He could cry (no one would be surprised)]
[ Vero might not be crying yet, but Chance feels his eyes watering as he says those words again and again. I love you. I love you so much. Joyous, shaky laughter bubbles up within him as he buries his face in his hair. ]
It's not just you... [ Try as he may to blink them back, tears begin to roll down his cheeks. (It's a happy cry, sure, but there's still the tiniest part of him that feels bad for crying.) ] I- I've loved you for so long...
[Hearing that wobble in Chance's voice is what sets Vero off and suddenly tears are dripping down his face as well. He squeezes tighter, tighter.] Yeah.. yeah....me, too.
[He shakes his head to himself.] Maybe even since our first time... [Which is a little embarrassing to admit, but Chance had treated him so well during their first hook up. He'd been so gentle, so sweet. The post coital cuddles had lulled him to a comfortable sleep that had never happened before. And, clearly, it hadn't been a one time thing.
[ There are a million things Chance could say - "I feel the same." "How are you so perfect for me?" "I love you. I love you." - but all of them fall short. None of them properly express how much his heart sings just being with Vero.
He draws back, just enough so he can look into Vero's eyes, and sniffles quietly. ] I- I want to kiss you. [ So he does. ]
[ A few stray tears drip down from Chance's eyes but he doesn't notice nor care. Not when he feels the fears that gripped his heart so tightly melt away beneath Vero's palms. He can kiss him as long as he wants - until the end of time, for all he cares. Because yes, they're the only two that matter.
Once they both have had their fill and their lips are soft and swollen, Chance presses one last affectionate kiss to Vero's forehead before making yet another unnecessary but charming announcement. ] I think this makes me your boyfriend now.
[ Chance wouldn't mind if time just decided to stop. He could just sit in that park forever, only half-focused on the movie they came to see because he keeps getting distracted by kissing Vero.
By the time credits begin rolling, their picnic dinner is completely gone (partially fed cutely to each other) and Chance has his arms around Vero's waist, with his back against his chest.
He nuzzles quietly into his hair, presses a couple quick kisses on top of his head. ] ... Can I admit something?
[ He knows he doesn't need to ask, but he still waits for Vero's acknowledgement before continuing. ] I don't want to go home yet. [ "I don't want this night to end." ]
[Well, lucky for Chance, Vero also doesn't want the night to end and he had planned in advance for this.
Or, rather, he had anticipated himself chickening out before, during, and after the movie so he needed to give himself another opportunity to confess.
Vero presses his back against Chance's chest. A little, playful gesture to acknowledge what he was saying.] Good, because I had more planned for tonight...
The movie may be over, buuut.... we are technically in a park. With a big, open sky above us.
[ Chance reads between the lines with ease and he can't hold back a warm giggle. Oh, how he loves this boy. ]

[ There's probably a better way they could position, but there's something that feels perfect about him tightening his grip on Vero and just toppling backwards onto the blanket. Like this, he's pretty much pinned beneath his now boyfriend's weight, but he's got a beautiful view of the stars above him so he's certain he'd have it no other way. ]
