[Somewhere, in the back of Linhardt's mind, a very small voice whispers: Oh... I can't not fuck him.]
Great pair, you say. I'm glad you're so confident, but I still don't understand why me? I don't care very much for social events and it's not unheard of for friends to go as each other's dates, but prom is most frequented by couples. I imagined you would want to go with someone you had romantic interest in.
[Linhardt can just imagine the perfect fairytale going on 90's teen chicflic prom Ferdinand would have in mind. It's wasted on him. Unless Ferdinand actually has feelings for him.]
[ In an instant, Ferdinand flushes, cheeks ruddy and nearly as bright and bold as the rest of him. Linhardt's spot on with his line of thinking, of course - he does want to go with the person he has "romantic interest" in. And he is picturing everything playing out in a cheesy, fairy tale way that may involve them both miraculously winning prom king and him kissing Linhardt very softly in the middle of a slow dance when no one's looking as the imaginary cameras zoom out, seconds from switching to the credit roll.
This moment - Ferdinand flustered, half tempted to hide behind the sign to grant himself a second to gather himself - deviates from the script. ] I- that is- !!
[ He takes a deep breath. ] I had wanted to tell you when I was more composed, but I'm afraid I can't afford to wait a second longer.
I'm in love with you, Linhardt. I would very much like to go to prom with you as your b- boyfriend. [ Though he stumbles over the word, he presses on undeterred. ] However, if you do not feel the same as me, I will not rescind my invitation. I will do my utmost to ensure you have an excellent time at prom, as your friend.
[Ferdinand is the type to earnestly ask a friend out to prom, but Linhardt would be lying if he said he wasn't a little relieved to hear that he wasn't totally off the mark on this one.]
That won't be necessary. I would much prefer to go with you as your boyfriend. [Love is very complicated and Linhardt isn't sure if he loves Ferdinand (he does) but he does have feelings for him. He wants to be his boyfriend. He's sure of that much.] If you catch my drift.
[ If Ferdinand weren't already burning up, he'd surely have burst into flames by now. The sign slips through his fingers, falling glitter side down on the sidewalk, and he stares at Linhardt, mouth agape, as he replays his words in his head.
"I would much prefer to go with you as your boyfriend. If you catch my drift."
"go with you as your boyfriend"
"as your boyfriend"
"your boyfriend"
"BOYFRIEND"
HE WANTS TO BE HIS BOYFRIEND????????!?!?!???!?!? ]
[ Joyous laughter bubbles up within him, and he closes the distance to clasp Linhardt's hands between his. ] Truly?! You want to be my boyfriend? Oh, I'm so overjoyed - please, assure me this isn't a dream!
[Linhardt blinks slowly, eyes on their hands now linked between them. "Assure me this isn't a dream"? How is he supposed to do that when Ferdinand is holding his hands? Not that he wants Ferdinand to stop holding his hands.
Ferdinand wasn't expecting Linhardt to actually do anything, let alone kiss him. But Linhardt's lips are warm and soft and his brain promptly short-circuits.
His hands involuntarily squeeze his, and a light tremble courses through him as he leans into the kiss. He's awkward and incredibly inexperienced when it comes to relationships (has linhardt kissed a boy before? or is he his first, too?), but he's... eager to become the best boyfriend he can be.
But first. When they eventually part, Ferdinand bites his bottom lip, a hint of laughter in his voice. ] I was planning on kissing you at prom.
[ It may be a dumb answer, but Ferdinand is still incredibly fond. ]
Of course I will kiss you at prom! If you'll let me, of course. [ Romantic as it'd be, he's not going to kiss him without consent! ] But it was to be our first kiss.
...In the middle of the dance floor, slow song playing, lights dim, and everyone around us too absorbed in their own partners to notice us? [Oh, Ferdinand.
Linhardt pauses, putting more thought into what he's going to say next than he normally would.] Who says we can't have two first kisses? This one is ours... the one at prom can be our first kiss as an official couple.
[ ... yeah, Linhardt's got that fantasy down to a T.
But Ferdinand is all smiles as he brings Linhardt's hands up and kisses his fingers. ] That sounds absolutely perfect. I-
[ - and then he wobbles, and has to rest his head on Linhardt's shoulder. ] M-my apologies, Linhardt. I may have gotten a bit... overwhelmed by emotion. I'm feeling a bit faint.
Please don't faint on my front lawn. [How the tables have turned. It's usually Linhardt resting his head upon Ferdinand's shoulder. He untangles one of his hands from Ferdinand's and brings it to brush a weft of Ferdinand's lovely orange hair behind his ear.] We can lay down inside.
[ Ferdinand leans slightly into that brief touch, a little delirious and a lot in love. ] Let us head in, then, before I really do faint on your front lawn.
[ After recovering the fallen promposal sign, Ferdinand follows Linhardt to his room and happily curls up in bed with him. Arms loose around Linhardt's smaller form, he drifts into a comfortable sleep with surprising ease. (any nervousness he feels from being this close to his now boyfriend promptly melts away when he feels the softness of his lips upon his once again, and the warmth of his breath tickling his skin.)
After that, it's harder than Ferdinand expects to not just brazenly hold Linhardt's hand at school. But he restrains himself, because no, they haven't had their First Kiss As An Official Couple yet! Once he kisses Linhardt at prom (dim lights and slow song mandatory), then he can start being just the tiniest bit PDA! Hold his hand, and maybe even h-h-hug him before they head to their separate classes! Oh, how scandalous but exciting! He finally understands the appeal!
It's these thoughts and the fact that he's genuinely excited to go to prom with Linhardt (which linhardt can no doubt pick up on, given how frequently ferdinand texts about it. where would you like to get dinner at first? what color will your tie be? do you need his assistance picking out a suit??? they could make it a date????????) that get him through the weeks leading up to the dance.
On the night of, Ferdinand pulls up to Linhardt's house a whopping ten minutes before they initially planned (though he gave him an updated ETA, as always!). He rings the doorbell and waits, rocking on his heels with excitement with a boutonniere for Linhardt (blue, to match his eyes) held delicately in his hands. ]
